Mixed-Use Traffic Lanes

Donald Appleyard

Design streets that allow various modes of transport to coexist in harmony.

Context

Inner city streets struggling to balance the use between vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Problem

Dedicated lanes for each transport type can lead to underuse and conflict, inefficiently utilizing street space.

Solution

Create adaptable lanes that can flexibly serve changing needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles as demand shifts.
